Erin Blaskie, Professionally Speaking
When you think of passionate love affairs, it’s not often that you also think about Internet Marketing. However, when you meet Erin Blaskie, you realize that those two things meld together in a way that just makes sense.
Erin Blaskie started her first company at the age of 21. After launching BSETC, a professional outsourcing team, she joined forces with some of the top Internet Marketers to support, build, grow and sell some amazing companies. To date, Erin and her team have serviced over 300 entrepreneurs in countless countries around the world.
Five years and a few more businesses later, Erin has put her hands on every style of business out there. Always one to figure out how things on the Internet work, she has made it her livelihood to experiment with the latest technologies, ideas and to even create concepts that didn’t exist before.
As a multi-faceted entrepreneur, Erin has been featured in five print books; received two awards at the 2010 Bootstrap Awards; honoured as Office Arrow’s 2008 Runner-Up Business Woman of the Year; interviewed by countless gurus and media personalities; featured in major news outlets such as Chatelaine, Costco Connection, ABC and CBC; and asked to speak at both national and international events.
• What were you doing in life prior to starting your business?
I didn’t have much time to actually live a lot of life before becoming
an entrepreneur. I became an entrepreneur at the age of 21 so before
that, I had finished school and worked as an administrative assistant,
executive assistant, marketing assistant and taught the Business
Administration diploma program at a private college. Then, I launched
BSETC (www.bsetc.com) and jumped right in.
• What do you love most / least about being a business owner?
I love the freedom and flexibility. However, I have to say that what
I love least is having a vision for your company or where you want to
go but having things pop up and interrupt that. Sometimes the
interruptions come from life and other times, they come from things
you can’t prevent or foresee inside of your business. I suppose it’s
the spontaneous stuff I like least
• What is your fave business book or author and why?
Seth Godin is one of my favorite business authors. My favorite book
of his is, “Tribes.” I love this book because community and building
community is so essential in business and in life. The book explains
why it’s powerful and why you should be paying attention to it.
• What business lesson did you have to learn the hard way? To this point, is there a mistake you see new entreps consistently making that you would caution them to avoid?
That growing pains are inevitable and they hurt! Businesses grow
really, really fast and experience all sorts of new and unforeseen
things… When this happens, your business can experience some moments
of intense pressure. For example, bringing on a bunch of new clients
without having the infrastructure to support it. The clients then
experience longer turnaround time, etc. Even when it’s not your
intention, it can happen.
Businesses should plan for what they know they’ll need in future and
have more than enough support, resources, etc.
• What has been your proudest moment to date with your business success?
I think every single day that the business moves forward and survives
and flourishes is a proud day for me. I now provide work to 28 team
members so knowing that I help them earn a living and be successful
keeps me feeling pretty proud every day.
• What are some of your biggest struggles/ challenges a business owner?
Finding enough time to do everything that I want to do.
• What new projects are you currently working on that you are comfortable sharing?
I’m actually in a bit of a holding pattern on new projects. I’ve
learned that sometimes, business success comes from perfecting that
which you already have in place – not always launching new things.
• If you could be doing anything else with your time career-wise, what would you be doing?
Making videos. All day, every day
• If you could hang out with any entrepreneur for the day, who would that be?
Hmm… this is a tough question. I have way too many entrepreneur
idols to choose only one. Jason Fried, Matt Mullenweg, Steve Jobs,
Pete Cashmore…
• Do you have a new product or service that you would like to share with our readers?
We’ve just recently re-vamped our www.bsetc.com website as well as our
www.thevacoach.com websites. I would direct people to both of those
sites as we have a TON of new blog posts and available information
that would be super helpful.
